Welcome birders to the BRAS' rare bird alert. The following was recorded on Wednesday July 28. Highlights include WESTERN KINGBIRDS nesting in Shreveport and BLACK-WHISKERED VIREOS nesting on Grand Isle.

BLACK-WHISKERED VIREOS are thought to be nesting in the woods behind the Sureway Grocery on Grand Isle. An adult and a juvenile were observed on 7/26, both vocalizing. The Sureway Grocery is on the north side of the main road through Grand Isle.

A pair of WESTERN KINGBIRDS is nesting in Shreveport in Caddo Parish. An adult and one fledgling were seen on 7/17. The nest is near the junction of LA 1 and Fournoy-Lucas Rd.

The following sightings describe high counts or concentrations, early arrival or late departure dates or very unusual sightings for the location and time of year.
 
Sightings from 7/27:
La Salle Parish: 550 AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS and 950 WOOD STORKS seen during a flyover of Catahoula Lake. The storks were in a small lake 1 mile west of the extreme SW corner of Catahoula Lake.
 
St Tammany Parish: a YELLOW WARBLER in Abita Springs.
 
Sightings from 7/26:
Jefferson Parish: several BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLERS on Grand Isle.
 
Sightings from 7/25:
Cameron Parish: 1 PALM WARBLER and several BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLERS at the Peveto Woods Sanctuaries west of Holly Beach.
 
Orleans Parish: 5 WHITE PELICANS, 1 SCAUP sp, 1 WHIMBREL, 4 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 1 probable WILLET, 25 DOWITCHERS, of which at least 2 were SHORT-BILLED, at least 10 WESTERN SANDPIPERS, 2 STILT SANDPIPERS and 5 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS at the old Recovery One landfill in New Orleans East.
 
Sightings from 7/24:
Caddo Parish: 3 STILT SANDPIPERS in Shreveport.
 
De Soto Parish: 9 COMMON MOORHEN including adults and downy chicks at a pond off the Evelyn exit of I-49.
 
Red River Parish: 1 SPOTTED SANDPIPER and 2 WILLETS at Lock and Dam #4 along the Red River.
 
Natchitoches Parish: 1 VIRGINIA RAIL (heard only), 5 COMMON MOORHEN, 1 imm LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER and 2 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS at a pond off the Powhaten exit of I-49. 1 SPOTTED SANDPIPER was seen at the fish hatchery in Natchitoches.
 
Sightings from 7/22:
Cameron Parish: 1 BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER in the town of Cameron.
 
Sightings from 7/21:
La Salle Parish: 800 WHITE PELICANS seen on a flyover of Catahoula Lake.
 
Sightings from 7/18:
Evangeline Parish: 894 WOOD STORKS, 40+ presumably WHITE-FACED IBIS, 92 ROSEATE SPOONBILLS plus hundreds of waders and shorebirds in some drained crawfish ponds about ¼ east of I-49 and about 3 miles south of the Hwy 106 exit off of I-49.
 
St. Martin Parish: 1 YELLOW WARBLER in Breaux Bridge.
 
St. Charles Parish: 1 AMERICAN AVOCET in alternate plumage, 2 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, 1 GREATER YELLOWLEGS and 6 dowitchers at the Bonnet Carre Spillway.
 
Jefferson Parish: 1 BRONZED COWBIRD in the Exxon fields on Grand Isle.
